In the 1940's, Royce Kershaw, Sr., a railroad contractor began to develop machines to use on his jobs. He invented a machine to regulate and dress ballast which significantly reduced his labor costs and produced a higher quality result. A second machine called a Cribbing Machine, removed ballast from between the crossties. These two machines were firsts of their kind. While these machines were developed for Kershaw's contracting business, interest in them soon came from railroads because of the dramatic cost reductions that they produced. In 1946, Kershaw turned his attention from railroad contracting to developing, manufacturing, and selling machines. The Ballast Regulator, which is still Kershaw's Icon Product, was the first machine type manufactured. Kershaw's current product line consists of over 50 machines marketed world wide to the railroad and utility industries. All manufacturing is done at Kershaw's vertically integrated facility in Montgomery, Alabama - USA.
